Immigrants from Nepal wrote their names and marked their hometowns on a map of Nepal.
이희경은 우리 사회에 일상화된 배제의 경험을 드러내기 위해 이주민들의 네트워킹 공간인 식당과 요리를 매개로 주제를 끌어내어 이주민이라는 단어에 쉽게 고정되고 정체된 존재를 지역을 함께 살아가는 개별적인 존재로 비추고자 한다.
영상 <염소와 옥수수>는 대전역 인근에서 네팔식당을 운영하는 먼주 구릉씨의 목소리를 통해 지역을 함께 살아가는 이의 삶의 이야기를 담아낸다. 영상에서 먼주 구릉씨는 모국의 요리를 하며 자신의 과거와 현재의 이야기를 들려준다. 화면은 그의 어린시절의 기억과 청년기에 지녔던 삶의 계획들 그리고 현재의 공간인 식당을 찾는 이주노동자 이야기를 오가며, 이주민 한 사람이 현재의 위치에 있기까지 그를 둘러싸고 있는 배경들, 아시아의 식민역사 이후의 세계화와 한국 자본주의 사회가 빚어낸 맥락 속에서 우리 사회에 배여 있는 편견과 차별을 짐작 할 수 있도록 한다.
To expose the experience of exclusion that has become a common practice in our society, Lee set her topic with restaurant, which is a networking space for immigrants, and food, and she wanted to shed light on immigrants, easily fixated and stagnant beings, as individuals that live together with the community.
The video, tells the story of those who live together with the community through the voice of Manju Gurung who runs a Nepalese restaurant near Daejeon station. In the video, Manju Gurung cooks the dishes of her own country, and tells stories of her past and present. It covers her own childhood memories, her life plans during her youth, stories of immigrants who come to the current space, the restaurant, and the current position of one immigrant and surrounding background, and helps us to imagine the prejudice and discrimination embedded in our society under the context of globalization after the colonial history in Asia and in the Korean capitalist society.
